So, what were the most amazing things that happened in this region in 2018?
Let’s take a look!
1) Boating and cruising along the shoreline.
The Great Lakes boast a breathtaking 11 thousand miles of coastline and this is the ideal place to swim, boat, fish, kayak and more! This year, locals and tourists alike enjoyed the many activities that these lakes have to offer. Nature lovers, especially, loved the Pictured Rocks (on Lake Superior) with its beautiful scenery, sandstone cliffs and waterfalls. Of course, the wildlife areas, arboretums and relaxing beaches were highly popular, too!
2) The Blue Angels fly over Lake Michigan.
Visitors to Lake Michigan were in for a treat this year when the US Navy’s Blue Angels took to the skies and flew in formation over Lake Michigan! There were several incredible water and air acts that left their audience awe-struck! On the ground, folks enjoyed some interesting events, activities and exhibits that made for an unforgettable day!
3) The Annual Chicago-based Sail Boat races.
This July, as usual, thousands of fans flocked to Chicago to witness the spectacular annual sail boat races. This race from Chicago to Mackinac is actually the world’s longest fresh water race. The race (affectionately known as “The Mac”) begins at the Chicago Lighthouse near Navy Pier and ends in Mackinac Island. There are usually around 350 boats participating and more than 2,500 people attend this event from throughout the country and even the world! This is definitely a must-do for anyone who has not enjoyed this previously!
4) The Best-Rated Campgrounds in the Great Lakes Area.
When visiting the Great Lakes area, you are spoiled for choice when it comes to beautiful and high quality campgrounds! However, possibly the top campground in this region would be Tahquamenon Falls State Park which is located in the Eastern Upper Peninsula. Here, you can view one of the largest waterfalls (Upper Falls) east of the Mississippi. There are also miles of scenic hiking trails, around 20,000 acres of natural, open spaces and a whopping 13 inland lakes to enjoy!
