Tahquamenon Falls is often referred to as the "Root Beer Falls" because of the unique amber-brown color of the water. The color comes from tannins, which are natural organic compounds found in plant material. The tannins from the surrounding forests are released into the water, giving it a brownish color that resembles root beer. The "Root Beer Falls" nickname has become a popular and affectionate way to refer to this beautiful and unique natural wonder in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
